Spinning Yarn
We have arrived much earlier than usual on Astypalaia, and the town is quite sleepy. We wandered around Chora, the village at the top of the hill, one afternoon and the town seemed quite abandoned. The only sounds were the constant whipping of the wind and the untethered wooden shutters clattering against the buildings.
Toward the end of our walk we happened upon this elderly lady spinning yarn from a big ball of wool. The wool appeared to transform into yarn and wrap around her spindle with a gentle tugging and spinning motion. However, when she let us try our hand at spinning the yarn we were unsuccessful and she had to correct our shoddy work.
She showed us some of her finished products, including warm socks and hats. We definitely don't need warm clothes at this time of year, but those socks must be cozy in the winter.
More soon.
