Greek Navy

This Greek Navy ship has been anchored just outside of the main port for several days now. I have been informed that it came from Kalymnos, a nearby island. I have no idea why it is there or how long it will stay.

It was quite windy today, you can see some of the whitecaps on the water.

More soon.

Update:  A local merchant whose shop has a terrific view of this ship informed us that a naval ship has been anchored there since September. It is not always the same ship. Each one stays for one week at a time and then a new one comes in and takes it's place.

The other day, early in the evening we did see one ship leaving the area. The next morning a new ship was there, anchored slightly closer to shore than the previous one.

Astypalaia is located on the edge of the Aegean Sea, close to major shipping lanes.  The navy is watching out for the refugees that have been crossing the Mediterranean hoping to land in Europe for a new life. Locals tell us that earlier this year two groups tried to make landfall. Not sure if it was on Astypalaia itself, or one of the other Dodecanese islands.
