Improvements

On the surface it seems like nothing really changes in Astypalaia. It feels a bit like the island that time forgot. However, if you look closely you will often be able to detect tiny changes or improvements.

As we drove into town from the airport I immediately started to scan the landscape for changes. The repairs to the windmills in Chora were the most obvious improvements. They had fallen into a state of disrepair with gaping holes in their roofs, but they are now being completely restored and painted a vibrant red color. Even the little crosses on top were replaced. The wheels have been recreated with new wood, but no sails yet. The wheels are tied down so that they don't spin uncontrollably in the wind. I'll post another photo if they put the sails on.

Other improvements include a steady supply of hot water to our shower at the studio. I can't tell you how often I have taken an icy cold shower here. The trash bins all around town have also been replaced with new ones. Lot of buildings are getting a fresh whitewash and the windows and door are trimmed anew. Green is the new trendy color for trim, although I prefer the classic blue. A white building with blue trim looks great against the cloudless deep blue sky.

More soon.
