Dinner at Maltezana
Today was the last day of the work week for us, we work six days a week from 7am to 3pm. We spend loads of time searching through dirt and gravel for bones, teeth, pottery and marine shell, some of which are as smaller than a grain of uncooked rice. So, by the end of the week we are ready for a change of scenery.
This week was even more taxing as we had important visitors from the Greek Ephorate, and we wanted to impress them favorably. So in addition to our regular work our schedules were a bit disrupted. In the end it all came out perfectly fine.
Andrea and I decided to rent a car and venture out to the village of Maltezana for a swim and dinner. It was super windy, but we soldiered on.
The first shot is of the view from our table, nobody is sitting at the front tables as we are all inside the taverna, taking shelter from the wind.
The first food pic is an appetizer of fava bean paste topped with tomatoes, onions, capers and cilantro. Mmm Mmm.
Next on the menu is eggplant saganaki. It is basically eggplant, zucchini, peppers and onions in a bit of marinara sauce topped with a local cheese. They bake this dish in the oven to get the cheese nice and bubbly brown. My favorite is plain saganaki without the vegetables, I just can't imagine anything better than fried or baked cheese.
The last picture is the complimentary sweet that many Greek restaurants offer as an after dinner treat to their patrons. This one is over the top, usually it is a few slices of watermelon or yogurt topped with very sweet syrup and fruit. We got a dense chocolate cake topped with ice cream. Yum! We were also give that lovely decanter filled with honeyed wine. I drank only a shot as I was the driver back up the long and windy road to our studio.
More soon.
