Halvadopita
Halva pie is my favorite hard tack Greek dessert because it travels well and is fairly indestructible. No melting chocolate, or dairy to spoil.
It consists of a thick layer of fluffy nougat mixed with almonds and honey. The filling is bound on each side by an over sized Eucharist wafer.
The wafer gives the pie a nice crunch and it holds together with the nougat when crushed.
I always leave Greece with a couple as emergency rations. Notice I’ve already broken one out and we have not left Astypalaia. Our flight is delayed and there are many loud shouting men at the ticket counter.
