Lunch at Vathy

Vathy is an extremely isolated corner on the remote island of Astypalaia.  Upon arriving there, you feel as if you actually may have reached the end of the world.  About twenty or so people live out there, I think mostly supporting themselves with what they harvest from the land and the sea.  Vathy lies on a natural harbor so fishing is important to their survival.  They also tend goats and chickens. Of course a veggie garden with tomatoes, cukes and peppers is a must.

We had lunch out there in a small taverna run by a local family. Our table was set by a man who apologized for his lack of formal serving manners, because as he explained, he was a fisherman, not a server. There is no menu at this establishment, the proprietor simply comes out and tells you what she is able to prepare for your party.  It kind of feels as if you have arrived at the home of someone who enjoys cooking for a big family. You are simply another hungry guest that stopped by and needs feeding.  No problem.

For lunch we had grilled octopus, Greek salad, tzatziki, bread and fried potatoes.  I am no fan of octopus, but this version was great.  I actually had two tentacles.

We ate outside, shaded from the sun by a deep portico.  The only sound was the clattering of pots in the kitchen, the wind and the waves lapping at the shore.  It was so peaceful that we were all almost lulled to sleep.

More soon.
