Turkey

I know that some of you have been wondering how far away we are from Turkey and if the failed coup attempt has had any effect on our lives out here in Astypalaia.  Our day to day living here on the island is unchanged.  The only clue that something is amiss is that this naval vessel has returned to watch over our butterfly shaped island.  The ship was here all last year during the refugee crisis and Greek banking meltdown, but it was absent this year when we arrived.  It returned as soon as the turmoil started to unfold in Turkey.

Astypalaia is relatively close to Turkey.  A map of the Dodecanese island chain will show you that the island of Kos is less than five miles from Turkey.  Kos is only forty or so miles from Astypalaia. If you squint really hard at this picture, you will see a faint outline of Kos floating on the horizon.  It has been unusually clear over the last couple of days, it is very rare to be able to see Kos from Astypalaia.

Not to worry, everything here is fine.  Even the wind has returned to cool us down a bit.
