Coffee
Coffee houses are traditionally exclusively dominated by men in Greece. I have seen very few women, besides the ones in the bioanthro project, hanging out in in the coffee shop. As a caffeine addict, this is a very troubling situation. Often the establishment is advertised as a coffee/ouzo shop. I think these guys live at these places, because they are there before dawn and late into the night. They stare intently at any woman that walks by.
Here are a few of them at one of the local places. You can see that one of them is highly amused that I am taking his picture.
One of the girls went to a coffee shop the other day and tried to order a black coffee using her limited Greek. The correct term is cafe sceto. She placed an order for cafe scata, which basically means coffee with shit in it. The place was roaring with laughter at her mistake. The locals are very patient with our remedial Greek, and teach us new words and phrases on a daily basis. Just as a warning, if you are in Greece and asking for bread, you had better pronounce it correctly or you will be in for an embarrassing moment.
This picture is a shot of not only the coffee house, but the fruit store and our favorite local supermarket.
More soon.
