Acropolis

Andrea and I were talking about how the Acropolis, the Parthenon in particular, is such an iconic image. We all know what it looks like even if we've never been to Greece. When you get up close to it you realize how massive the structures on the Acropolis are. It is often a challenge to get a good photo, because you have to keep stepping backwards.

On a previous trip to Athens I used the Acropolis as a navigational guide to sort out my location. The streets in the Athens are a maze, so it is great to be able to look up and gather your bearings based on a fixed landmark that towers over the city.

We didn't get a chance this time to go into the Acropolis Museum, but if you find yourself in Athens you should go. The floor of front entrance is transparent, so you can see the excavation of the ancient city below the modern building. The upper floor of the museum mirrors what you see on the Acropolis. Very well done indeed.

We head over to Astypalaia this afternoon. Should be blazing hot when we get there, 35-38 degrees Celcius.
