Crumbling infrastructure

After looking at some of the high end photos I've posted, like yachts and the sweet shop, I decided some reality was in order.

Many of the structures are crumbling or bucking, as you can see in the photos above. Serious looking stress fractures are common on many buildings. I cringe when I see the termite ridden wood that is holding up the street level patio of our building. Just a reminder that most people are not living the high life.

Power outages are common, but they are usually short lived, maybe 20 minutes. Brown outs, blown fuses and power surges are also common.

Staircases have steps of various heights and sizes and there is not a railing in site. It is charming and hazardous at the same time.

A visitor to our lab on open house day put it best. He said that he was living in a classic Greek house in the sense that everything mostly worked. His hot plate warmed up even though it shocked him when he turned it on. One shutter on the window worked, but the other was broken at the hinge. The power fluctuated. But all in all everything mostly worked and that was all you could ask for.

Just a reality check.
